Toddlers are dangerous and accident prone. Besides not being completely steady on their feet, they are still learning to coordinate jumping with landing and climbing without falling. At least my toddler is learning all these tricks. At just about 34" he is a monkey with no fear. In many ways I am relieved that he is not fearful, or maybe not aware of dangers, on the playground or around his world. (People on the other hand, bring out Mr. Bashful.) He loves the playground, which he calls the "claycround," and requests going whenever we drive by it. He will try just about anything and I have to stop him from going on the big kid apparatus sometimes.
Last week, while I was flossing my teeth, mr. monkey was hurdling himself over the side of the tub. On his landing out of the tub he collided with either the floor or the leg of the sink and ended up hysterical with an eyelid that was quickly turning shades of blue and purple. It still looks like he has dark eyeshadow on, but the bruise is healing nicely.
Today, while at the playground, he hurdled over the side of a wooden train and fell flat on his head, winding up with a bit of a scrape and small egg on his forehead. It sounded horrible and I was calculating the quickest route to the ER while running to scoop him up. He was upset but ok and there was hardly any swelling. In a few minutes he ran right back over to the train to play again. He is a sturdy little guy and really has fun. Thankfully bumps and bruises do not make him frightened. I remember always bein fearful of new things as a kid, a fear I don't want my monkey to have!
His imagination is really blossoming now too. He started to "ribbit" the other morning in our bed, out of the blue. When I asked him what he was doing, he pointed to a pretend frog that was on his pjs and ribbited again. This morning he woke up and looked at me quietly and then pointed to his sleeve and "showed" me his frog before he ribbited. It was very cute.
The two's so far are more terrific then terrible. I keep hearing how bad the threes are, though!
